Design Studio III

Project 1 Memorials themed ‘Journey of the 5 senses’

The project 1 have divided into two session which are PRECEDENT STUDIES: Analysing spatial poetics & spatial typologies in architecture and ‘Journey for the 5 senses’ Memorial. In a group of 5 members, we have to propose 2 schemes for a Memorial themed 'Journey for the 5 senses.'  Two incidents for the Memorial Journey are Rohingya, Kedah and the Earthquake for Sabah. We need to design a memorial based on this two incidents in the form of semi-open architecture by using two contrasting spatial types of your choice. We have chosen the Rohingya as the centric form while Earthquake is the linear style. The precedent studies that we chosen are the Hagia Sophia as centric theme while Hiroshima Peace Memorial is a linear form.I learnt on how to Identify and explain different spatial types in architecture, and how they inform spatial use and experience. In addition, I also learnt to create tectonic expressions of different spatial typologies which impact on the uses and experiential conditions of space.

Project 2 GENIUS LOCI: Site Analysis & Concept Development

In the  Project 2, we required to make an analysis of the site context in Sungai Lembing that we have visited as a starting point. In the same group from Project 1, we also need to conduct site analysis of the MACRO site and produce a 5-10 minute digital presentation per group. For individual, we need to do a personal interpretation & concept development as a response provide inspiration for a contemporary idea that connects directly with history of the site. The concept that I chosen is transformation based on the timeline of historical stories on Sungai Lembing. Through the project, I could able to communicate the findings for Personal Interpretation place by using pictures and sketches and able to produce a meaningful and suitable concept for the design. While in the group, I also able to carry out the research of site analysis and conclude the data through visual and audio.

Project 3 GENIUS LOCI: VISITOR INTERPRETIVE CENTRE (VIC)

In the project 3, we need to develop from the project 2 to create a Visitor Interpretive Centre for Sungai Lembing based on the same concept used. The interpretive centre will serve as two purposes which are to provide a physical point of reference with visual significance that keeps alive the history of the site and to provide accommodation to house and display relevant material and interpretive material for public access and information. I have included several design elements to make the concept more stronger that relevant with Sungai Lembing which are hierachy, harmony in nature, centralised, light and shadows, and intersection. Through this project, we could able to identify the pragmatic and metaphysical response to the positioning of architecture within its context. Besides, we able to make the development of functional requirements and the relationships between spaces to facilitate the given programme and the accuracy of the provided area schedule.
