Architectural Design Studio 1

Project 1: Self-Expression through Object ‘REPRESENTING ME’

In this project, we decided to create an abstract sculpture that representing yourself which can be your personality, characteristics and others. First of all, we have to think a theme before started to think about the design of the sculpture. Our tutor wanted us to bring out an object that could explain and represented your character. So, I have chosen a watch as myself that brings me lot valuable and memorable moments. This is because I could not live without my watch as I like to know and see the time every moment so I could arrange my schedule accordingly. I have made a theme of repetition and rhythm as I am an organised person which will be following the schedule and punctual on everything without wasting any seconds. Picture above shows the abstract sculpture that I have created. The sculpture is designed as a wind shape as it brings the meaning of when you are wasting your time, the time will be flow away as fast as the wind. So, it reminds me to save the time and use it wisely.

Project 2 :Life Capsule ‘LIFE CAPSULE’

In this project, we will also be introduced the basic design principles such as the ways in organizing and articulating spaces and form. Further, this will allow us to enhance its ability to articulate and dictate space in developing ideas and interpretation of the self to design a limited space. We will have to explore more about the role of function and objective parameters in the design processes. 3-dimensional thinking, looking from different angles, applying different types of drawings (like sections, rather than mere plans) and creative models are essential to develop the design of the confined space.

In a group of five or six members, we have to be cooperating on completing this project which is design a comfortable life capsule for a specific client. Firstly, we have been advised by our tutor to bring out an activity so that we could develop out a concept of the design. One of our members has suggested “Sleeping” as our activity as this is the most important for a person health. Without sleeping, we might affect our health mentally and physically. So, we decided to create a Sleeping Life Capsule for Architectural students as they every time get a lack of time on sleeping and spent most of the time on burning midnight oil for assignments.

We have collected and prepared all the materials such as hard paper core, cardboards, newspapers and others in the beginning so we would not be rushing on finding the materials. Next, we designed the shape as a cubism shape which inspired by the magic cube and Tetris as it is enough stabilise and strong enough to support at the ground. We started to build the life capsule about 1 week without sleepless night and picture above shows the final 1 to 1 model of our life capsule.

Project 3 Space for the Self ‘MY CITY DREAM SPACE ‘

In Project 3 you will be required to design a dream space for yourself by ‘grafting’ or engaging it to the walls of an imagined ‘city’ on an empty abandoned lot. The design should be inspired by your personal understanding and perception of a hideout that best fits your users’ personality & individuality.

Task 3A-Understanding the site

We have to choose one of the buildings scene from a selected movie as our site buildings for our Hideout Dream Space. After discussing with our same group members, we have chosen The Inception movie buildings scene as our site buildings which is during the buildings are combined together from up to down and some are inverted. Each of our members decided to build two buildings which are short and tall so the total of buildings that we have made is ten buildings and stick together to create a city scene which is just like the movie scene that we have chosen. Picture above shows the site buildings for our group and the A2 board of our site buildings.

Task 3B- Narrative, Conceptualization and Design

After the process of making site building, we have to produce a Hideout dream space for our specific client so that they could do their own stuff in a comfortable space. I have chosen Tim Burton as my client as I felt that he has the same personality as me and I likes his movies very much. He always create some animation movie that are interesting and enjoyable such as Alice In Wonderland, Corpse Bride and others. He brings lot of childhood memories to us. Through the research, I have known that he wanted to wear a monster costume and wreck the Tokyo City during his childhood. However, He could not be the Godzilla so he decided to be an animator then. I inspired by his childhood dream and wanted to design the dream space based on the story. So, the shape of the model is created based on the Japanese Legend monster, Godzilla with the sharp and rough surface. I have designed a working space and resting space him while viewing the scenery of the Inception world.
